Here is the placement notice for Dooley, the Southeastern Guide Dog (SEGD) puppy in training sponsored by NHS in honor of Mr. Tom Dooley and raised by Mr. Jon Sperling.
Following his puppy training with Mr. Sperling, Dooley was fast-tracked into guide dog training, but after being diagnosed with cataracts, Dooley’s guide dog training shifted to placement in a Gold Star Family home.
(A Gold Star Family is the immediate family member(s) of a fallen service member who died while serving in a time of conflict.)
Families apply to SEGD for a Gold Star Family dog and the wait time for just the right match can be fairly lengthy. While not serving as a guide dog as was NHS’s original hope, perhaps Dooley’s placement with this family even better reflects Mr. Dooley’s character and MCC’s Franciscan values of happily and selflessly helping others in whatever capacity we are called to serve.
