The Melbourne Central Catholic Cadet Corps (C4) is an in-house academic elective designed to teach and develop leadership attitudes and skills in our students that will help prepare them to meet the challenges of the real world. True leadership is a rare commodity in today’s world; we often rely solely on management/corporate policy or executive decisions prepared by committees rather than true leadership. But people don’t always follow committees or executive decisions: they follow leaders.
Leadership is developed through respect for self and others, through trial and error, through confidence in yourself and others confidence in you. Leadership is not management. Leaders can be effective managers but managers are not always effective leaders. MCC is a leader in academic excellence. The Catholic Church is a leader in the world. We are not a group of managers. Jesus is a leader; he calls us to lead today, to set and follow standards, to not settle for comfort but strive for greatness, to be the best version of ourselves – we who were created in the image and likeness of God. Our C4 program will provide excellent opportunities for our cadets to learn and develop the skills necessary to be leaders in our world.
Our program is not affiliated with any particular military service but a unique blend – a composite – designed specifically for MCC and our students. Everything we do will reflect MCC and the ideals we believe in and want to uphold. In time we intend to compete against local JROTC units in various skills.
Leadership Education I-IV
CLOSE ORDER DRILL Drill teaches teamwork, discipline, and how to follow instructions. Unarmed drill, armed drill (with rifles), drill teams for competition, exhibition drill with and without rifles, squad (7 cadets) platoon (12 plus cadets). Seniors/older cadets are the drill commanders. Competition is intense at various levels. Teams take drill very seriously. Practically any cadet can drill in a unit, but they need to buy into the team concept. Drill is no place for individuals. This is a team event.
MARKSMANSHIP Three-position (3P) “Sporter” air rifle is one the fastest growing sports in America. It is safe and challenging, requires effort and discipline to master, and allows cadets to compete against other teams and individuals. They can earn qualification awards and bragging rights.
COLOR GUARD Four cadets form a color guard: two flag bearers and two rifle bearers (guards). CG is a very specific event. The presence of a CG makes events very formal; our CG will appear in uniform at various school presentations and perhaps at feeder schools if requested. This is possible the most competitive event in JROTC.
If there is interest in a drill team/rifle team/Color Guard – those activities will be after school.
